Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas: A Deep Dive Into the Star Wars Jedi

Share the Universe!

There are so many characters in the Star Wars universe that it can be difficult to keep track of all of them!

Many of these characters have in-depth backstories, as well as quieter- yet no less significant- impacts on the greater lore and events within the fictional universe.

One of these characters is Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, who is known for his long-lasting impact on the Star Wars universe due to ordering the clone army creation even before the events of Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

However, there is a lot more to Sifo-Dyas than meets the eye.

In this article, we will be taking a closer look at his creation of the clone army, as well as his rise to Jedi Master status and his particular abilities. Let’s get started.

Humble Beginnings

Sifo-Dyas was the son of a fisherman, born in 102 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) and hailing from the planet of Minashee located in the Cassandran Worlds.

His Force sensitivity was discovered by Master Cherff Maota when he was still an infant, and he was brought to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant where he would become a youngling and begin his Jedi training.

Jedi Besties

Sifo-Dyas formed a tight-knit bond with another Jedi who had a long-lasting legacy in Star Wars, Count Dooku.

During a trip to Dooku’s home world of Serenno, Sifo-Dyas noticed that Dooku was distressed as his sister Jenza had been buried under rubble after a ground quake collapsed the Great Assembly building.

Jenza survived after the Jedi Masters lifted the rubble off of her, and (due to his bond with Dooku) Sifo-Dyas gave Dooku a communicator as a gift so that he could always keep in contact with Jenza for the decades that they would be separated.

The Bogan Collection

After discovering Klias Teradine’s journal (an arrogant former Jedi apprentice) Sifo-Dyas found out about the existence of the Bogan Collection within the Jedi Archives.

These forbidden artifacts had links to the Dark Side of the Force, and Sifo-Dyas’s curiosity led him to convince his friend Dooku to help him break in and find them.

Dooku found that he had a strong connection to one of the artifacts, causing him to hear beastly sounds that made him panic and accidentally summon a Force wave, which destroyed some of the artifacts and injured Sifo-Dyas.

Jedi Master Lene Kostana

Lene Kostana was a Jedi Master who had an interest in The Bogan Collection and following his break-in at the Jedi Archives, she encouraged Sifo-Dyas’s interest in Dark Side knowledge by sneaking “The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth” to him.

This book was a compendium of Sith War Beasts written by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Caldoth.

Despite Dooku’s pleas for him to turn in the book, Sifo-Dyas refused to do so.

Kostana went on to choose Sifo-Dyas as her Padawan learner despite Dooku’s clear betterment of him during the Padawan Tournament, wherein he bested Sifo-Dyas in combat whilst blindfolded and with one arm tied up behind his back.

Force Vision Powers

Under Master Kostana’s tutelage, Sifo Dyas was able to open his mind to the Cosmic Force current, which in turn granted him the ability of Force Vision.

This ability allowed him to see visions of the future incredibly vividly.

Kostana hid these powers from the Jedi Council for fear that his foresight would be considered a danger, but she also encouraged him to take these visions as seriously as possible.

Dark Side Artifacts

Both Sifo-Dyas and his teacher Master Kostana dedicated many of their years to locating more Dark Side artifacts, successfully expanding the Bogan Collection extensively during that time and increasing their knowledge of the Sith and their connection to the Dark Side.

Balancing Light And Dark

Sifo-Dyas and Kostana aided Dooku (whose powers were growing unstable) to restore the balance of the Dark Side and the Light via an ancient ritual that used bindings.

Jedi Knight

Although Sifo-Dyas went on to achieve the position of Jedi Knight, his Force visions were still severe, and so Master Kostana continued to work alongside him.

Dooku and Sifo drifted apart during this time, with the visions also taking a toll on him and causing Sifo-Dyas to develop a stuttering speech impediment.

Jedi Master

Although Sifo-Dyas rose to become a leading member of the Jed High Council, tensions began to rise between him and his fellow councilors prior to the Invasion of Naboo due to him having a strong vision of an upcoming, full-scale conflict.

Because of this, Sifo-Dyas lobbied for an army that could be created to fight for the Republic.

He would go on to be removed from his position when the High Council members considered his methods of obtaining this army to be too extreme.

The Clone Army

Sifo-Dyas reached out to the Kaminoans (known for their clone hatcheries) as he devised a plan to secretly task them with creating an army of clones for the protection of the Republic.

He managed to commission Prime Minister Lama Su to personally create the army, but only did so by convincing him that it was a project requested by the Galactic Senate.

Betrayed By A Friend

Whilst Darth Sidious needed Sifo-Dyas’s clone army for his plan to bring down the Republic and the Jedi Order, Sifo himself was considered to be a loose end.

Because of this, Dooku (who had become an apprentice to Darth Sidious) hired the Pyke Syndicate to destroy the shuttle that Sifo-Dyas was travelling in for a mission, killing Sifo in the process.

The Legacy Of Sifo-Dyas

Sifo-Dyas’s legacy is a warped one due to the clones that he originally created to protect the public being turned into an army that would try to destroy it, along with the Jedi as a whole.

This was because of the behavioral modification biochip that Darth Sidious and Dooku (Darth Tyranus) installed within each of the Clones which would brainwash them into murdering any and all Jedi.

Final Thoughts

There you have everything that you need to know about Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas from the Star Wars universe!

Whilst his name might not be one that you instantly recognize from the franchise (unlike the likes of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, or Han Solo) he is still a crucial part of the major storylines within Star Wars due to his involvement in the creation of the clone army.

His connection to Count Dooku is also an important one, with his friendship being an integral part of Dooku’s character development as well as his turn to the Dark Side.

Unfortunately, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas’s legacy would go on to be tainted due to Darth Sidious and his former best friend Dooku/Darth Tyranus causing his death and utilizing his clone army for their own benefit and to tear down the Jedi Order that Sifo-Dyas held dear.
