How Did Darth Maul Survive

How Did Darth Maul Survive

Share the Universe!

In 1999 Darth Maul captured the interest of the world when he debuted in The Phantom Menace.

The red headed Sith Lord looked terrifying as he ignited his dual-bladed lightsaber and then went on to fight Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi beneath the palace on Naboo.

As we all know, the Sith killed Qui-Gon but was bested by Obi-Wan who used his fallen master’s lightsaber to slice Maul in half and the now much shorter Sith Lord fell down a chute so deep it looked to travel to the core of the planet itself.

So you’ve probably seen the title of this article and are wondering how can someone survive not only being cut in half but falling down a massive hole in the ground. Well the life of Maul from that moment is a long but entertaining story.

Maul’s Fall

So the big question is how did he survive? Well to quote Sheev Palpatine, “The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

After being defeated by Kenobi, Maul would end up on a junk planet named Lotho Minor where he would manage to survive his fatal wounds by focusing intensely on his hatred for Obi-Wan

Maul would remain on the planet for years until he fell into madness and survived on the vermin that lived in the junk piles. He assembled legs out of junk that left him looking like a spider.

He would be found on the planet by Savage Opress, Savage was another Zabrak who was picked out by Count Dooku to become his new apprentice.

A Sith Reborn

Opress took Maul back to their homeworld of Dathomir where the Nightsister Mother Talzin used dark magic to restore Mauls body and his mind.

Darth Maul was reborn and with his brother the two began a rampage across the galaxy. Maul’s main feat during the Clone Wars would be when he took control of the planet Mandalore.

Mauls Reign

So how did Maul take over one of the most infamous plants in the Star Wars galaxy? Well he formed alliances with groups such as Death Watch, a faction of Mandalorians who want to return Mandalore to its warrior past. He also aligned with the Black Sun and the Pyke Syndicate to form the Shadow Collective.

With this new collective Maul and Opress launched a campaign to take over Mandalore, the fight was brutal and ended when Maul defeated Death Watch leader Pre Vizsla in a duel.

During Maul’s rise he would encounter and battle Kenobi multiple times throughout the Clone Wars with the Jedi always slipping from Maul’s grasp.

In an act of revenge against Kenobi, Maul would kill Obi-Wan’s former love Duchess Satine Kryze. This act would have unintended consequences for the new ruler of Mandalore; it would cause a ripple in the force that was sensed by his former master Darth Sidious.

Sidious would travel to Mandalore and declare the two Zabraks to be his rival. The Sith Master would attack the pair and kill Savage Opress; a beaten Maul was taken captive.

The Siege Of Mandalore

Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Maul would make one final attempt to kill Kenobi and now he wanted to kill Anakin Skywalker. During his time on Mandalore, Maul had figured out Sidious’ intentions to make Anakin his new apprentice.

His attempt to draw in the Jedi failed when Skywalker’s former padawan Ahsoka Tano turned up instead, Maul would attempt to turn the situation into a positive by trying to recruit Ahsoka to put a stop to his former master Darth Sidious.

Ahsoka wouldn’t believe Maul and engaged him in the throne room of Mandalore where she would be victorious and capture the former Sith Lord and along with her Clone battalion, began to transport Maul back to the Jedi Council.

During the trip back to the Jedi Council, Order 66 would be enacted making all the Clones turn on Ahsoka, to try and draw attention away from herself the former Padawan would release Maul to create a diversion. Maul would then steal the ship Ahsoka had planned to escape on and he fled the cruiser.

Life During The Empire

Crimson Dawn

Following the rise of the Empire, Maul built an empire of his own, a crime syndicate named Crimson Dawn. He operated the syndicate from his home world of Dathomir.

Rebels

A young Jedi Padawan named Ezra Bridger headed to a planet named Malachor to find the power to destroy the Sith. When he uncovered the city under the planet’s surface, he stumbled upon Maul who befriended Ezra and with his help acquired the Sith Holocron.

Maul then accompanied Ezra, the boy’s teacher Jedi Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka Tano to the Sith Temple where Maul would then betray the group by revealing the temple was a battle station and then attacked Kanan who was blinded with a mericialous strike to the Jedi’s eyes.

The three would fight Maul forcing him to escape the planet on an inquisitor’s ship.

Ezra was tracked down by Maul and was forced to open the Holocron. After finding the Rebel base on Atollon, he made Ezra and his friends accompany him to Dathomir where a ritual gave Maul the knowledge that Obi-Wan had survived Order 66 and was hiding on Tatooine.

The Final Duel

Maul would travel to Tatooine and try to locate Kenobi, however after wandering the sands hopelessly he used Ezra to draw out the Jedi. The plan worked and drew out Kenobi who Maul for one final time engaged in combat.

The fight ended with one strike of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. He knew Kenobi was on the planet to protect someone, so as he lay dying in his old enemies arms he asked if the person Kenobi was protecting was ‘The Chosen One’ Kenobi would tell him ‘He is’, and Maul would finally pass uttering his last words, ‘He will avenge us.
